Formulating with palmitoylethanolamide.

PEA is well behaved: neutral in taste, effectively colorless, thermally stable through normal processing and chemically unreactive toward most common excipients. The two things that will catch you out are its hydrophobicity and its low bulk density.

Handling characteristics

What to expect on the line

Hydrophobic by nature

Log P around 6 and practically insoluble in water. It will float on an aqueous phase and resist wetting unless you give it a surfactant, a lipid carrier or a dispersion system. Plan for this in any liquid format.

Low bulk density when milled

Micronized grade is fluffy and can carry static. Expect a larger capsule shell than the milligram figure suggests, and specify slip and glidant accordingly.

Thermally forgiving

Melting range 95–101 °C. It survives standard gummy depositing, tabletting and soft-chew extrusion, but should not be held far above its melting point.

Organoleptically quiet

Essentially odorless and tasteless at label doses. Any off-note in a finished product is almost always coming from something else in the matrix.

Chemically unreactive

A simple fatty-acid amide with no ionisable groups at physiological pH. No meaningful incompatibility reported with common minerals, vitamins or botanical extracts.

Photostable in practice

Stored dry, closed and below 25 °C, PEA is a stable solid. Standard opaque or amber finished-pack protection is more than sufficient.

Format guidance

Grade selection and practical notes by dosage form

FormatSuggested gradeTypical payloadFormulation notes
Hard capsulesM or UM300–600 mgSize 0 or 00 depending on grade density. Add a flow aid; micronized PEA alone flows poorly on high-speed encapsulation.
TabletsM300–500 mgDirect compression is workable with a compressible diluent. Watch capping at high PEA load; wet or roller granulation improves robustness above 40% w/w.
SoftgelsM or UM200–400 mgSuspend in a lipid vehicle. PEA is dispersible in MCT and similar carriers; this format also gives a natural bioavailability narrative.
Gummies & jelliesM100–300 mgAdd after the cook step, below 90 °C, into a well-agitated slurry. Micronized grade suspends evenly; normal grade tends to sediment in the depositor.
Soft chews (pet)Normal or M50–300 mgCold-formed chews tolerate normal grade. Micronized improves homogeneity in small chews where the per-piece dose is critical.
Stick packs & sachetsNormal or M300–1200 mgCombine with a fast-melt or effervescent base. Effervescence assists wetting and largely removes the dispersion problem.
RTD shots & beveragesCWD150–400 mgNeeds a dispersion or emulsification system. Do not attempt with unmodified powder — you will get a ring on the neck of the bottle.
Oral films & sublingualsM25–100 mgPayload is limited by film mechanics and content uniformity is a particle-size problem first. Talk to us before committing to this format.
Topical creams & balmsM or UM0.5–3% w/wDisperse into the oil phase before emulsification. Gritty texture is the failure mode; finer grades avoid it.
Bulk powderNormalScoop-dosed products and further-processing customers. The most economical grade per kilogram.

Category positioning

Where PEA is actually selling

Five categories carry the overwhelming majority of global PEA volume. Each has a different evidence base and a different competitive shape.

01 · LARGEST

Nerve comfort & neuropathic support

The deepest clinical base and the highest consumer intent. Sciatica, diabetic neuropathy and post-surgical nerve discomfort dominate search behavior. Typical positioning: 400 mg micronized, twice daily, with a 60-day trial framing.

02

Joint & mobility

Supported by a three-arm placebo-controlled knee osteoarthritis trial at 300 and 600 mg/day. Formulates naturally alongside collagen peptides, glucosamine, boswellia and curcuminoids in both human and pet lines.

03 · FASTEST GROWING

Companion animal

A genuine controlled trial in 50 dogs and 50 cats gives this category evidence that most pet supplements lack. Veterinary practices in several markets already stock PEA. Underserved on the supply side.

04

Sleep, mood & cognition

A sleep-onset RCT at 350 mg and a crossover cognition trial at 700 mg with a BDNF endpoint. Earlier-stage evidence, but a natural pairing with melatonin, magnesium and L-theanine.

05

Women's health

Pelvic pain and endometriosis-associated discomfort, generally as PEA with polydatin. The meta-analytic evidence is real but the authors themselves rate the underlying study quality as poor — position carefully.

06 · EMERGING

Headache & migraine

Two recent randomized trials, including a PEA-plus-melatonin combination that reduced monthly migraine days. Almost no consumer-facing content exists yet, which makes this the most open positioning in the category.

Combination systems

PEA rarely travels alone.

The most differentiated finished products in this category are combinations. We supply the components and can co-mill them to a shared particle-size distribution rather than simply blending them.

  • PEA + luteolin — the co-ultramicronized pairing used in most European neuroinflammation work, including post-viral olfactory studies.
  • PEA + polydatin — the combination studied in endometriosis-associated pelvic pain.
  • PEA + melatonin — the basis of a recent randomized migraine-prevention trial.
  • PEA + magnesium / B-complex — the commercial mainstream of nerve-comfort formulations.
  • PEA + collagen / glucosamine / boswellia — joint and mobility stacks in both human and pet formats.
  • PEA + dispersion system — for beverages and any format where cold-water wetting matters.
